There is tension in Moroto villages located a few miles from the Uganda-Kenya border after the death of two people in separate ambushes last week. The Tepeth and Matheniko communities are now accusing one another of masterminding ambushes that have so far left 12 dead in the last seven months.
The Uganda People’s Defense Forces—UPDF is set to recruit an additional 1,400 local defense unit (LDU) personnel in Karamoja sub-region, raising the number to 3500. In 2010, President Yoweri Museveni ordered the army to recruit and train about 2000 LDUs to help boost the disarmament exercise in the sub region.
Meanwhile, traffic in Moroto town parking and movement for all vehicles has been altered for fear of a terrorist attack on the first lady’s convoy. Motorists have been asked to keep out of town temporarily. Vehicles leaving or entering Moroto have been diverted five kilometres before reaching town.
