The protest came a few days after Arimpa Kigagi, the NRM Electoral Commission Vice Chairperson declared the Mineral State Minister, Sarah Achieng Opendi as the NRM party candidate for the Tororo Woman MP seat.
In a twist of events, NRM has withdrawn the flag from Mwesigye and decided to conduct fresh elections. Through his lawyers of Okello Oryem & Co Advocates, Col. Mwesigye has written to Odoi, seeking an explanation on the results, his declaration and endorsement as NRM candidate for Nyabushozi constituency.
Each of the aspirants is required to present at least 100 signatures from 2/3 of the districts across the country. Uganda currently has 146 districts, implying that a candidate is required to have signatures from at least 96 districts, prior to their nomination. Each of the seconders is expected to be a registered voter with a National Identification Number.
Two years ago, government waived 21 billion Shillings in property rate arrears owed by government institution. This however did not encourage many of them to start paying the dues that accrued thereafter. Currently, government institutions owe the Authority 8.4 billion Shillings
According to Ocaya, the use of abusive languages not only degrades the respect one deserves but also breeds hatred among the candidates which may turn into violence if not addressed.
The ACFIM executive director Henry Muguzi said that most people seek leadership in political parties and national offices to use influence of the office to enrich themselves.
Over 30 candidates are vying for various political positions in Obongi district alone. But several of them have lodged complaints indicating that their supporters are facing harassment from security teams commanded by the Resident District Commissioner Gore Goffin.
