The probe team led by Vice-chairperson of the Committee Agnes Taaka Wejulu interacted with former Presidential candidates including, Democratic Party’s Norbert Mao , Alliance for National Transformation (ANT)’s Mugisha Muntu, and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Presidential candidate Patrick Amuriat Oboi.
The Committee was tasked by the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga to take stock of violations that marred the electoral process. It is expected to report back within a month. As part of the investigation, the committee is planning to interact with Presidential candidates, securities agencies, among the police and the army, as well as victims of the said violations.
According to Lubega, this proposed system will bring the cost of administration down from the more than 500 MPs to 130, from 130 district leadership units to 48, and from more than 80 ministers and state minister to 54. The proposed system also provides for decentralized governance system where the local governments shall have more powers regarding mobilization and application of public resources.
“UWONET’s election related work including working with women and youth from different parts of Uganda through the Women’s Situation Room to enhance peace building in our country during and after the elections, trainings in the remaining districts for women candidates including independents and those from all political parties and observation of women and gender issues in the elections has been affected,” reads a statement issued on Saturday.
“There was also talk that there would be another attempt at having a joint candidate for 2021 and Bobi Wine didn’t want to be left behind because using 2016 as a case study, political parties can decide not to include you. You remember at that time Erias Lukwago was one of the most powerful politicians in the country but he was left behind because he didn’t have a political party,"Kifampa said referring to the 2016 polls.
They don’t want completion because the last time we ring fenced their seats. Who are they not to have competition if even my office is competed for? How can they say they are democrats when they don’t want completion? I think they are just hyperventilating for nothing.
On Tuesday, Justice Ssekaana declined to step down from the matter in his ruling read by the Deputy Civil Division Registrar, Sarah Langa, arguing that he took oath to be independent, saying no one can influence his decisions.
Speaking to journalists at his offices in Kamwokya hours after a meeting with the Police leadership and the Electoral Commission, Kyagulanyi said that there was agreement among the three parties that, it is within his right as a presidential aspirant to reach out to Ugandans without any restrictions from the police and other security organs.
