“It is not the mandate of the Traffic Police to start controlling traffic for you to go and have lunch, or to go and have parties, wave jam for you to go and visit your girlfriends and boyfriends,” Nuwabiine said at a press briefing at the Naguru Police Headquarters Monday.
Released by Lawrence Nuwabiine, the Director of Traffic Police at the Police headquarters in Naguru Wednesday, the report shows that 4534 people died in 3901 road crashes in 2022.
Without mentioning the exact date, the Traffic Police Spokesperson, Faridah Nampiima told journalists on Monday they will soon start checking drivers and their conductors for COVID-19 vaccination cards.
Assistant superintendent of Police-ASP Faridah Nampiima, the traffic spokesperson said that they have heightened operations to curb indiscipline on the road especially during this festive season.
According to Nampiima, the move is aimed at allowing the completion of works on the road, which is in its final stages before being handed over to the government.
“Since last week, we have so far impounded 1,393 and out of these, 624 were issued with Express penalty tickets, 289 riders were warned and left to go, 186 were taken to court and charged according to the Traffic and Road Safety Act 1998 whil 295 motorcycles are still pending action at different police stations," Nampiima said.
The directive follows a weekend incident where a 40-year-old former driver with the United Nations-UN was lynched by a group of violent boda boda riders in Mengo-Katale after knocking one of their colleagues on Sunday.
