The farmers supply their produce to Igara- Buhweju tea factory, the only factory in the district. It was constructed in 2010 with the capacity of producing 100,000 kilograms however, the farmers are supplying much more than what the factory can process.
The eight have been identified as, Kyogabirwe Jovita, 30, and her three children Timothy Tayebwa 12, Annah Nkarekaho, 6, and Akora Agnes, 8, months old. The others are Teopista Keminagano, 81, Busingye Specioza, 60, Shalon Ampiire, and Amanya Nkorenkabo who died shortly after admission at Bwizibwera Health Centre IV in Kashari.
The area LC I Chairperson, Joseph Babyeyangira, says one of the residents he identified as Kyomugisha went to check on Kyoshabire in the morning and found their door open will the family members lying in a pool of blood. He says only 13-year-old Akadwanaho could reply to her call. “It was Akadwanaho who answered and that is when she came to me and told me what had happened,” he said.
The groups say that artisanal miners are continuously using toxic mercury to extract minute pieces of gold that is mixed in the soil, and other materials. The process entails mixing mercury with materials containing Gold, in order to form a mercury-gold amalgam, which is later heated to a temperature that vaporizes the mercury and leaves behind the Gold.
The Gold mine hosts hundreds of miners and business people who flock the area for lucrative business on a daily basis. Our reporter visited the area and found that the miners use the nearby swamps and bushes as latrines.
Rev. Father Keneth Baingana the parish priest Bihanga parish observed that it will be unfair for President Museveni and his Government to punish the people of Buhweju for voting opposition and yet they lso overwhelming voted for him too.
The animosity between the two sides started after the January 29th raid on St. Kizito Bihanga Catholic Parish by the then RDC Moses Mwebesa, District Police Commander Ben Nuwamanya and other security personnel.
The structure, worth over 100 million will house offices for all the NRM legislators in the district. It will also have offices for the NRM Chairman, the district NRM General Secretary, administrative staff, and a conference hall.
