Women activist groups say the election of Rebecca Kadaga to the post of Speaker of Parliament is an indication of an indication of a steady stream of changes increasing the gender mix in Ugandaâ€™s political landscape. The women are however say the raise should be reflected in all other posts across the country.
There was prolonged laughter in Parliament as member of the Opposition nominated Edward Kiwanuka Sekandi, a member of the ruling NRM to contest for the post of Speaker of the Ninth Parliament. Sekandi who has been Speaker of the Eighth Parliament stood however stood down saying he had not been consulted. He had been nominated by Kyadondo East MP, Ibrahim Semujju Nganda. 375 MPs have cast their votes in an election widely expected to be won by Rebecca Kadaga.
