The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has this afternoon directed parliaments rules, discipline and privileges committee to investigate State Minister for Water Ronald Kibuule. Her directive followed a review of yesterdays footage at parliament which confirmed that Kibuule had eluded security checks to enter the Chambers with a fire arm. Kibuules motive for entering with a weapon has not yet been established.
Opposition Members of Parliament have condemned the manner in which 25 MPs suspended from the House were manhandled by security. Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga suspended 25 members for instigating chaos which led to the suspension of the house proceedings on Tuesday.
Amnesty International has called on the Uganda government to stop threatening media outlets over their live coverage of events related to proposed removal of the presidential age limits. This comes after Uganda Communications Commission UCC today issued a directive warning of dire consequences for broadcast stations, both radio and television, that relay live feeds from Parliament where the issue is under debate.
The decision came after the Igara West Member of Parliament Raphael Magyezi sought leave of parliament to introduce a private members bill entitled The Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2017. In the bill Magyezi seeks to amend Article 102 b of the constitution in order to change the presidential age limit, now capped at 75.
Several opposition legislators were arrested and others injured in a scuffle triggered by the suspension of 25 MPs by the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga. She accused them of breaching the rules of procedure following their protest of a move to amend article 102 b of the constitution in order to lift the presidential age limit.
The Square is also renowned as a scene of political protests, which are usually swiftly quelled down due to its proximity to the Central Police Station. Consequently, the police and the military frequently occupy the Square, sealing it off to the public.
Those suspended include Allan Sewanyana, Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, Betty Nambooze, Mohammad Nsereko, Mubarak Munyagwa, Dr Sam Lyomoki, Barnabas Tinkasimire, Moses Kasibante, Ibrahim Kasozi, Angelline Osegge and William Nzoghu.
