The curriculum which was introduced in lower primary school in 2007 requires that teachers use the pupils’ mother tongues as languages of instruction from Primary One to Primary Three while teaching. But researchers found that teachers are largely unaware of how to translate basic scientific concepts yet the same curriculum proposed that science is integrated into themes taught.
Dr Jimmy Opigo, the Programme Manager of Malaria Control in the Ministry says they plan to integrate the vaccine into the routine childhood vaccination schedule for children but are still discussing whether they should start with highly endemic areas as a pilot or roll out generally.
While the nurses are entitled to a daily allowance of Shillings 5000, some of the nurses interviewed by URN, say they have gone a week without getting their allowances. They also note that the Ministry of Health is still non-committal on when the money will be availed.
Dr. Abdilahi Muhammed Lomwar, the acting Hospital in Charge, says that although the number of patients has more than doubled the hospital is still operating below capacity due to inadequate medical equipment and health workers.
