WHO Reports 54% Surge in COVID-19 Cases in Africa 1

The two southern Africa countries account for 62% of cases reported globally, said Dr. Abdou Salam Gueye, Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response at WHO Africa Regional Office at the weekly press conference. He said Omicron has a high number of mutations in its spike protein at 32, and preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection, when compared with other variants of concern.

Among them is a start-up by Ugandan innovator David Lwangwa who is creating a platform for cancer patients to take charge of their treatment using Artificial Intelligence.

Omicron Variant: Govt to Carry out Genome Sequencing for all Passengers' Samples WHO 3

The minister of health, Dr Jane Ruth Acenf says the variant has not yet been detected in Uganda. She however adds that as a measure to ensure early detection of the variant, genome sequencing will be carried out on all COVID-19 positive tests of travelers entering the country by land or air.
