Byakabanda Parish chairperson Eliab Kiggundu Ssango said that none of the two government secondary schools has a single qualified science teacher despite the subjects being compulsory. As a result, he says, the Sub County is posting poor results in National Examinations, with no candidate qualifying to even join Primary Teachers Colleges.
The publishing press hosted under the University Directorate of Research and Graduate Training (DRGT) was relaunched with publications by Dr Wilfred Lajul, Professor John Wotsuna Khamalwa and Dr Saudah Namyalo.
The researchers found that while 70 per cent of P.6 students achieved the minimum competency level in reading, only 40 per cent of those tested reached the same competence in mathematics. They say evidence of poor learning outcomes is substantiated by the national Early Grade Reading Assessment results.
