Betty Akello, an enrolled midwife attached to the facility explains that the Health center cannot handle any maternity related cases currently, a reason they are referring them to Lira Regional Referral Hospital or Ogur HCIV.
Subsequently, the room ceilings from the general and maternity wards also followed, forcing mothers who were at the unit to sleep under their beds.
A total of 54 suspected COVID- 19 patients are admitted under institutional quarantine at Lira Nursing School. The authorities at the facility say that the facility cannot accommodate any more people, yet there is a possibility of having more suspected cases in need of quarantine.
The traffic police department of the region says that it has so far recorded 10 cases of fatal accidents, in which 11 lives were lost, 23 serious accidents, and 12 minor accidents during the entire period of the lockdown which started at the end of March.
The truck which was loaded with cement had a brake failure and knocked a tipper registration number UBG-149D, which was ahead of it before swerving off the road. In the process, four people who were found on the roadside sustained injuries, and several properties were destroyed.
The letter followed a resolution by the municipal authority to have some traders from produce lane relocated to the said land located at the timber yard in Railways Division.
The municipal leaders had gone ahead to start grading the land ahead of the relocation process.

Brigadier Michael Kabango, the Uganda People’s Defense Forces 5th Division Commander said that the continued congestion at Lira Produce Lane and the Bus Park contravenes with the social distancing guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health to curtail to spread of coronavirus.
During the meeting, the Lira Resident District Commissioner and Task-force Chairperson, Milton Odongo expressed concern about the huge influx of South Sudanese nationals as one of the biggest challenges to their efforts to combat the spread of the virus.
Although Lira is already overwhelmed with patients just like the other Referral hospitals in the region, the officials says more patients will have to be brought in since sporadic cases are still being confirmed.
Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng told the Lira District COVID-19 Task Force that the low capacity among frontline workers, coupled with the laxity among members of Public is an indicator that the area was ill-prepared for the catastrophe, and that this is a cause for worry, if the situation is not well handled.
