During her appearance before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa, Mpungu denied the charges and was remanded. On Wednesday, Mpungu returned to court from prison where she has spent over a month on remand, and applied for bail.
According to the DPP, during the hearing, she will argue that the accused persons have no defense whatsoever and they should therefore be convicted as charged.
The prosecution told the court that on March 16th, 2022, Uwera, Odeke and others still at large with malice aforethought caused the death of Mahad Mohamad at Dembe Trading Enterprises Limited in Bugolobi in Nakawa Division in Kampala District.
The prosecution alleges that while at Cheap General Hardware, Nansana in Wakiso District on May 29th, 2019, the suspects together with others still at large with malice aforethought unlawfully caused the death of Jimmy Atukuru, Frank Anania, Abaho Frank Mutsinda and Amim Bugembe whom they shot dead.
On Tuesday, the suspect's lawyer Hamza Ssekidde asked the prosecution led by State Attorney Rose Aoja to clean her hands and drop the charges against his clients, saying they didn’t commit the crime for which they are being held.
In his ruling, Odwori directed them to write to Uganda Prisons for permission to visit their clients and report back should prisons turn down the request. He, however, rejected another prayer by the lawyers to allow doctors to conduct a CT scan and general health of the accused persons.
