The long distance sensational crossed the finishing line in a time of 57:31 at the World Athletics Label road race in Portugal to claim the lead and become the fastest man in history over the 13.1-mile race.
Cheptegei 24, started with sharp sprints and maintained his pace before he increased the speed towards the 400m mark where he looked intimidated by the Tokyo Olympics 10,000m gold medalist Selemon Barega from Ethiopia.
The 19-year old Chelimo qualified for the finals after finishing fourth in the first round of the competition posting a time which of 13 minutes and 39:07 seconds which is a few seconds below his personal best which stands 13:06:79.
