A provisional list that dates back to 2013, includes names of 10 Eritrean nationals, eight Kenyans and six Ugandans. The Ugandans include, among others, Hajj Makanga Abdu, a Ugandan long-distance driver who was shot dead with his son, Umar Ssembuse aboard truck number UAH 151R, which was burnt at Ganjji – Yeri Road in March 2021.
The 10-member committee Selected during a cross-border committee meeting held in Nimule Town Council on Thursday will have officials from the immigration, customs, security, local governments, the Ministry of Health as well as members of the business community from both Uganda and South Sudan.
Hersi Abdiriza, 45, was found dead in his guest house room in Lorikwor West Ward, Elegu Town Council in Amuru District around 6:48 am on Tuesday. His compatriot Osuman Ibrahim reported the death to the police.
The compilation will include drivers and turn-men from within the East African bloc that includes Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Burundi who were killed while en-route to South Sudan capital, Juba to deliver goods between 2012 to date.
Sudi Mwatela, the Chairperson of Long-distance Truck Drivers Association has told URN that the South Sudan authorities started clearing the bushes along the highway from Nesitu in the East Equatorial on Wednesday morning.

Last month, over 6,000 truck drivers suspended travels to Juba and parked their cargo fleets at the Elegu border at the Ugandan side in protest of armed violence on foreign drivers along the Nimule-Juba highway.
In the latest development on Monday, South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation wrote to the embassies of Uganda and of South Sudan pledging their commitment to providing security along the Juba-Nimule Road.

Government records show that 14 Ugandans were killed in South Sudan between May and August 2021. They include; Ali Mark Sony, Amati Stephen, Dada Abugo, Sadam Andama, Katongole Hussein, Abdu Makanga, Kuraish Mutebi, Sembusi Kato and Amono Anna Clara, among others.
Robert Onekalit, the in charge of Elegu port health revealed that as the truckers’ protest enters the 10th day, residents are at risk of infections because the drivers are freely mingling with the border community.
