The walkout followed the withdrawal of Walter Elakas Okiring who stepped down from the ULGA presidential race. Elakas with four others had initially expressed interest in the ULGA presidency.

The contenders include incumbent George Mutabaazi, the chairperson of Lwengo district, Mityana district chairperson Joseph Luzige, Kabarole District chairperson Richard Rwabuhinga, Katakwis Walter Elakas Okiring and Joseph Lomonyang, the chairperson of Napak district.
The disagreement stems from a letter Jude Mbabaali wrote to the Minister of Education and Sports early this month, protesting the allocation of a 2.12 billion Shillings grant to Turbuk Senior Secondary School, a Muslim founded government-aided school located in Mukungwe Sub County.
