The settlement initially opened in 2017 sits on a 50 square miles’ piece of land donated by host communities in Palabek Ogilli and parts of Palabek Gem Sub-counties. Although it was initially meant to accommodate 40,000 refugees and asylum seekers, its capacity was increased to 60,000 after the Office of the Prime Minister-OPM acquired more land.
The 1,443km East African Crude Oil Pipeline will transport Uganda’s crude oil from Hoima in Uganda to the Chongoleani peninsula near Tanga port in Tanzania. It is envisaged to be the longest electrically heated pipeline in the world, crossing through 10 districts in Uganda, a distance of 296 kilometres and 25 districts in Tanzania, covering eight regions.
The facility was closed in June following an eviction order issued by the court that directed the health unit to evacuate its initial location following a longstanding land dispute with one of its neighbours.
Through their lawyer Oyet and Company Advocates, the pastoralists have filed a civil suit at Gulu High Court seeking redress against a decision reached by the leaders on October 21. They argue that the decision to forcefully evict them from Palabek County was illegal and a violation of their rights.
Led by Fred Watuwa, the Kayunga District NRM Registrar and the administrator, Betty Namazzi, say that the chairperson stopped them from conducting the party activities at the district office when they declined to back his daughter, Jackline Birungi as their candidate for the district woman parliamentary seat in the 2020 primaries and instead declared Agatha Nalubwama who genuinely won the polls.
