On Wednesday night, Parliament chaired by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga passed the Constitutional Amendment No.2 Bill, 2017 that scrapped the upper and lower presidential age limit, reinstated term limits and extended the term of parliament from five to seven years. Now those opposed to the amendments, led by the Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza, have dubbed their new effort Kogikuteko loosely translated to mean now that youve touched it. Even though Kiiza declined to delve into the specifics of what their new campaign will entail, she noted that the opposition was getting ready to challenge the new amendments in court.

On Wednesday night 315 legislators voted to remove presidential age limits while 62 voted against with two abstentions. Parliament also agreed to reinstate presidential term limits in the constitution, more than 12 years after they were removed in a previous constitutional amendment in September 2005. Legislators further agreed to extend their term of office from five to seven years Some of the MPs argue that it is a win-win situation for both the opposition and the ruling party. They also say there is a final stop to what many call plans to entrench a life presidency through the term limits.

Only 62 legislators voted against the Bill that has since its tabling in September 2017 by Igara West MP caucused tension and for the first time in the history of parliament, saw a brawl in the Chambers with the invasion of security personnel. Only two MPs abstained from the vote at the second and third reading of the bill.

The deployment of security forces inside the houses of prayer at Parliament has taken a new twist with the Archbishop of Kampala declining to officiate at the end of year mass of the Catholic community. Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga was expected to lead mass on Wednesday but he was a no-show. Dr. Lwanga who was expected to lead the mass and also light a Christmas tree stayed away citing the Tuesday invasion of the Catholic chapel making the sacred place unholy, hence unworthy for use in worship.
