Simon Peter Edoru Ekuu, the Soroti District LC V Chairperson told the MPs that the local leaders have been sidelined in the exercise. He said that the district officials also depend on the information from the beneficiaries who have been given varying statuses on compensation.
Seven aspirants who had picked up the nomination forms were Moses Attan Okia Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Hebert Edmond Ariko National Resistance Movemet (NRM), Pascal Amuriat Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC), Joseph Ogita (Independent) Stephen Omoding (Independent), Herbert Omoding Olaboro (Independent) and Isaac Okore Democratic Party.
Achieng told voters that if they vote for the NRM candidate she will make sure that all the wards in Soroti City East get health centers. Ogwang told voters that they are going to pitch camp in Soroti City until the campaigns are done on July 28, 2022.
The controversy follows the suspension of ICU Council by the former Emorimor, Augustine Osuban Lemukol over the alleged irregularities and inconsistencies during the 2019 election. ICU Cabinet and the harmonization committee, also appointed by the former Emorimor, recommended for an audit into the said elections before council is constituted to spearhead the election process of replacing Osuban.
Emorimor’s final journey back home started on Monday with requiem mass at Nagugongo shrine. On Tuesday, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni paid tribute to Osuban, a man he described as an advocate of peace and unity in Teso.
At Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, Dr Wilson Etolu, the COVID-19 Focal Point Person at the hospital told the MPs that the health workers are demoralized by the deductions on their allowances. Etolu also said that the frontline workers delay receiving the allowances.
The oxygen plant in the hospital produces only five cylinders of oxygen in two hours, a rate that falls far below the 150 cylinders a day required for the current number of patients at the COVID-19 Treatment Unit. Currently, the unit is managing 74 patients with 45 severe cases on oxygen support, while 98 others are in home-based care.
The team led by Dr. Joseph Epodoi, the Consultant Surgeon at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital successfully separated conjoined twins comprising one alive and one dead apart. The conjoined twins had been referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital but medics there declined to carry an operation citing high risks to the living twin.
In his judgment read by Tumwebaze Ayebare, the Soroti High Court Deputy Registrar, Justice David Wangutusi noted that when parliament amended the constitution in 2005, Commissioners who draw salaries from the consolidated fund were included among those who ought to resign before they seek political office.
Jose Jimmy Walamoe Lorwor, the deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Soroti district has been detained by Police, for abuse of office. Lorwor was arrested on Friday afternoon jointly with Jolly Nakiru, the Principal Treasurer of Moroto Municipal Council.
