Kasubi Royal Tombs Thatching Starts Buganda Kingdom 6 3

The thatching has started with Prince Daudi Chwa, the Kabaka’s representative handing over a brown bull to the royal builders -the wabula-akayole- to be slaughtered and its blood poured to avert any tragedy that would occur during the construction. This has been followed the Prince giving 4 strands of thatch grass to the wabula-akayole to start thatching.

Why Kabaka Mutebi Got Involved in Kasubi Tombs Reconstruction Buganda Kingdom 3 2 Top story

This ritual was last performed in 1882 when Kabaka Muteesa I personally put up three rings in the ceiling of his Kasubi Nnabulagala Palace as it was being constructed. These rings supporting the roof are part of the 52 rings in this tomb that symbolize the 52 clans of Buganda. Thus Kabaka Mutebi II is the first reigning King of Buganda to climb up the roof of the main hut, Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, to place these rings ever since Muteesa I was laid to rest under them in 1884.

Kasubi Royal Tombs now Close to Completion Buganda Kingdom 1 8

The Katikkiro attributes the slow progress of the restoration to cultural norms and rites associated with the tombs that have to be followed closely to make sure that the tombs are restored in the right way without altering any of the cultural prerequisites.
