The impounded fishing gear includes 15 boats and over 200 undersized fishing nets. They were impounded in the three days operation that started last Friday in different landing sites of Singila, Kandege, Maninga, Gorofa and Yebe, all in Namayingo district.
Gen. Kyanda explained that AFALU is not accountable to anyone and their excesses are blamed on the Fisheries Protection Unit personnel who in most cases not aware of their unscrupulous operations.
Gen. Kyanda argues that although the UPDF high command has received written complaints entailing the rot in FPU operations, physical interface with survivors is paramount in gathering evidence against the accused officers.
Patrick Ochieng, a resident of Singila village accused some FPU officers of conniving with their civilian counterparts to confiscate their fishing nets and charge them between 200,000 and 300,000 to recover them.
