The bank still holds up to 44 billion shillings which remained of the 62 billion which was the total set aside to revive the tourism industry from the covid-19 setback, out of which only 18.2 billion was disbursed.
In 2019, the Ministry of Works and Transport, contracted Omega Construction Ltd to build the road and the bridge over River Ssezibwa at 21 Billion Shillings. It was supposed to be completed within 18 months, but the contractor was granted a six-month extension.
During the meeting, the officials noted that there are over six million nationals from the region working abroad. They noted that the workers face similar challenges such as lack of access to health care, delayed payment or non-payment of wages, physical torture, mistreatment, confiscation of personal and travel documents, sexual harassment and long working hours.
The officials had visited the mining site to investigate complaints from the community that the company was discharging contaminated water directly into a nearby stream, a tributary to river Kiruruma, which flows through Kabale town to Kyanamira and Maziba sub-county up to Rwanda.
