The 3.9 billion shillings construction work was initially expected to be completed within 15 months, however, an additional four months was added to allow the contractor to complete the project.
Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, the Health Minister and Lira City Woman MP, presided over the ground-breaking ceremony and emphasized the need for the hospital to have enough land for expansion and the installation of other modern facilities. She also warned the community against encroaching on the hospital's land.
With the new lab, the hospital will conduct liver and renal function tests, Prostate surface antigen, thyroid function tests, Histopathology and other specialized tests, resulting in a standardized and elevated level of care.
Dr. Zohaib Hassan, a Pakistan Consultant Ophthalmologist who attributed this to a possible lack of facilities and the costs involved in the treatment, wondered why the cataract condition is so common among the people in the Lango sub-region.
