Located at Pamba ward in Katakwi Town Council, the abattoir has two solar-powered boreholes, feeding troughs with fly-proof nets, incinerator, refuse pit, store, offices, four stance toilets, bathroom, meat rails and four holding grounds for cattle, goats and sheep.
During her monitoring visit to Katakwi District on Thursday, Kanyike said the ministry’s technical team is developing a cabinet paper to be discussed in the cabinet on how to reduce the age of beneficiaries.
According to the report, Katakwi Town Council leads with 190 cases, followed by Magoro with 188, Usuk Sub County 177, Katakwi Sub County 137, Ongongoja Sub County with 115 cases, Ngariam 89, Kapujan 87 and Omodoi 100 while Palam Sub County registered the least number with eleven cases.
Through the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment, the government pays senior citizens above 65-years of age a monthly stipend of 25,000 Shillings. However, the elders in Katakwi say they have not received their stipend for five months, partly because of the COVID-19 lockdown.
The conflict emanates from a piece of land measuring about 300 hectares where Iteso community have settled inside Napak district, along the border point. It is alleged that after selling land to the Iteso, some of the Bokora elites including local leaders mooted plans to recover the said land.
Moses Elungat, a resident of Ongongonja Sub County has asked government to come to their rescue by providing them with drugs, mosquito nets and education services for their children since the Karamojong who claim the contested land have evicted them.
