Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng who declared to the masses that Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been successfully nominated as a presidential candidate called upon everyone to vote for him come 14th February 2021.
As most roads in the north and eastern parts of Kampala were blocked to motorized traffic, motorists using the Kampala-Jinja Highway to the city centre were most affected, with traffic being diverted at Jokas Hotel through Kyaliwajjala and Port Bell Road to the city Centre.
Speaking to the media after his nomination, Muntu called upon the Electoral Commission to organize an election that is acceptable to all those who are going to take part in it. “Don’t fear, Do what is necessary, conduct a free, fair and transparent process, the country is behind you. It’s your choice; tough but you have to make it,” Muntu said.
According to the Electoral Commission, all the affidavits that accompanied the nomination papers had not been commissioned, an anomaly which could only be rectified by the commissioner of oaths.
Before the amendment in 2015, an aspirant had to pay eight million Shillings but would receive 20 million Shillings from the Electoral Commission to facilitate their campaigns. But this and the distribution of vehicles for the candidate were abolished in the amendment.
She, however, said that the decision was not a result of family pressure, but an afterthought based on the advice of the senior leaders of the National Resistance Movement. Kansiime had been nominated as an independent candidate after withdrawing from the NRM primaries that were eventually won by Annet Katusiime Mugisha.
Uganda Radio Network interviewed some of the so-called strangers along Freedom Drive in Magere near the home of NUP’s presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi and they said they came from Entebbe.
Tumukunde arrived at Kyambogo University Playground where the exercise is taking place almost an hour before his scheduled time of nomination. But after 25 minutes into the verification process, the process was halted.
“I encourage everybody to maintain peace, I’m contesting but I’m a president, I hear so many things, but I can assure you nobody is going to cause chaos here. If they try, they will regret, nobody has more guns than us. Therefore, nobody should threaten us,” Museveni said.
He was nominated and seconded by Gaddafi Nasur, the NRM youth League chairman and Hellen Seku, an NRM supporter from Kamuli village in Kira municipality. This is the sixth presidential election that Museveni will be participating in. He first came to power in 1986.
