According to statistics obtained from police in Aswa River Region, a total of 366 homicide cases were registered in Acholi Sub –Region in a period of 15 months. Out those cases, 301 were from January to December 2020 while 65 were from January to March this year.
The deceased was identified as James Tako. Preliminary police investigations reveal that Tako drowned when he and his peers had gone to swim on the turbulent river, a tributary of Aswa River that joins River Nile.
Robert Oken, the officer in Charge of Criminal Investigation at Kitgum central police station told URN in an interview Sunday that attempts by the girl’s parents and relatives to locate her on Thursday failed to yield results. He says another search conducted on Friday led to the recovery of Anena’s lifeless body and a bicycle she used in a bush.
The minor was defiled on Sunday in Bwobo Aywaya Sub-Ward, Patuda parish, Layibi Division in Gulu Municipality. The case was reported to Mican Police Post by Zainabu Atayo, the victim's mother.
In his statement to police, Ambrose Lalim, one of the suspects claims that the five engaged the deceased in a bitter quarrel, which ensued in a fight. They reportedly ganged up Okot and clobbered her with clubs to death.
Ezekiel Emitu, the Aswa River Region Police Commander- RPC, says the latest victim of the attacks is 29-year-old Benedict Okumu. He was hit with a blunt object on August 25th, 2019. He succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the attack at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor on August 31.
The accident happened after an overloaded white Fuso lorry registration number UAU 206Y carrying at least 40 traders overturned after its breaks failed.
