“Those very officials escorted us to the bank and after withdrawing the money, they immediately wanted us to give them a kick back which we earlier declined," says a member of the beneficiary groups who reported the officials to the police. "After a week, I agreed to pay them 150,000 Shillings, but they kept on harassing me as they demanded for more money.”
Natuk was yesterday arrested after joint monitoring on the project by district leaders who were also following the activities of the Youth Livelihood Project. It emerged that many of the members of her group had failed to pay loans they borrowed from the revolving fund.
The suspect identified as James Bubumbi, a resident of Kasubi, a Kampala suburb has been arrested from Kyegwegwa District from where he plotted to con several schools under the pretext that UNEB would withhold their results due to their purported involvement in examination malpractice.
