Boda boda and taxi operators in Kampala want government to remove national public holidays arguing that they affect their daily work routines and profits. Referring to national public holidays as days that only benefit people in government, boda boda and taxi operators that Uganda Radio Network spoke to believe that they would be better off if national celebrations like International Labour Day were scrapped from the national public holiday calendar.
Land Forces Commander, Major General Peter Elwelu, was today awarded the Rwenzori Star medal, five months after he led a military assault on the palace of the Rwenzururu King in which over 100 people were killed. Elwelu is among the 143 people awarded with Rwenzori Star medal, Golden Jubilee Medal and Police Medals in Pallisa district during the ceremony to mark International Labour Day.
The labour officers argue that the lack of labour inspectors hinders the enforcement of labour laws. The Employment Act 2006 provides for labour inspectors in the districts. The act also states that the inspectors are responsible for examining workplaces to ensure compliance to health and safety requirements, legal terms and conditions of work and observance of labour laws.
Speaking at the International Labour Day celebrations in Pallisa district today, Museveni warned that people should eat food relief carefully because they may be eating a school or a road. Museveni also warned that food aid may dissuade people from working who will instead wait for food aid from government.
