A copy of the communication was posted on the university social media pages. But this has sparked wide criticism over the uncompromising university management. The communication drew mixed reactions from social media users.
On August 20, 2018, Abenakyo wrote to Prof. Wasswa Balunywa, the Principal Makerere University Business School - MUBS requesting to defer her retake in the Financial Management course unit that was scheduled for September 1, 2018.
According to some students, Makerere Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and his Personal Assistant Gordon Murangira were seen driving past the students in a private vehicle shortly before Kwagala was picked up.
David Musiri, who refers to himself as the Chairperson of former suspended students of Makerere University, wants Prof. Nawangwe investigated for issuing fake degrees, diverting money meant for bursaries and corruption among other allegations.
Law dons contend that it was unconstitutional and unlawful for Management to suspend or otherwise purport to discipline any leader of staff association or union for any act done in furtherance of their staff association or union interests.
Now, three staff Associations including Makerere University Academic Staff Association-MUASA, National Union of Educational Institutions of Uganda-NUEI and Makerere University Administrative Staff Association-MASA have tasked the university to reinstate their leaders.

Prof. Nawangwe says; Dismissed staff all have the right to appeal against the Appointments Board decisions through proper channels. We should all join hands and stamp indiscipline and impunity out of Makerere University.
Nawangwe said the allegation about the University Council and the Appointments Board was unsubstantiated, adding that the move and the communication about the same, sent to Education and Sports Minister Janet Museveni were extremely arrogant, very disrespectful and provocative.
Prof Nawangwe argues that the suspension that runs until further notice is meant to ensure safety and security of members of the university community and property as well provide serene environment for peaceful activities of the university.
Andrew Abunyang, the Director Human Resources directed Nuwagaba to immediately hand over University properties to the college principal. Abunyang says upon on handing over, the Principal should give Nuwagaba a clearance letter to present to the University Bursar to enable processing of his dues and any monies that he may be owing the University.
The Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, says the council directed them to overhaul all halls of residence in the university. He however, says they will give priority to Mary Stuart Hall, adding that University engineers are currently assessing the cost of the repair.
