Mobile Money Tax Lacks Basis - ICT Body mobile money taxes

The information and communication technology association of Uganda ICTAU has issued a statement asking government to reconsider the recently introduced taxes on Mobile Money and Over-The-Top OTT services. ICTAU chairman Albert Mucunguzi says in a statement issued today and published on the organisations website, that the new taxes were enacted without sufficient deliberation or consultation and are not supported by evidence-based research.

Mobile Money agents that Uganda Radio Network interviewed says customer numbers are already reducing. For instance, Namanye Jacqueline who operates a mobile money stall Kiira Road in Kamwokya says new taxes are deliberate means by government to chase them out of the business. She says the tax is more than double taxation because it involves many charges from the time one deposits the money until its withdrawn.
