Senators Cory Booker and Jim Risch who are both members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations expressed concern about the state of rights violations and democracy in Uganda. Their concerns were documented in a letter dated March 4, to the Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Speaking to NRM leaders who were attending President Yoweri Museveni’s second campaign at the rugby grounds in Jinja City on Friday, Mukula argues that, Uganda suffered a political crisis in the post-independence times due to inexperienced leaders who acted on emotions rather than reason.
Speaking to URN in an interview shortly after addressing NRM delegates drawn from various areas in Busoga sub region on Friday, Sanjay said whereas his rivals are playing the racial card on the basis of his Indian accent, he is a Ugandan with sufficient capacity to serve his fellow countrymen.
“The recommended candidate for Principal MakCHS, has never been Chair/ Head of Department, but has been a substantive Dean (School of Medicine) for only three months, having service previously as Deputy Dean –a position that does not exist in the University Structure,” say staff of the college in their petition to council.
“Government is paying money on a decentralized system for the Organisation. We have to know what happens in the districts. Why can’t some of these services be executed in the districts? Why do you have to bring the whole Uganda here [in Kololo] and expose our weaknesses?” Biribonwa questions why all services are being offered at the Kololo-based NIRA headquarters.
According to Dr Tusasirwe, the courts were initially not designed as rights enforcement mechanisms but as instruments of law and order and regulation of transactions such as business, land and marriage among others. He argues that in their current state, courts look at enforcement of rights as a secondary role.
Responding to questions from Journalists on Uganda borrowing a lot of loans for infrastructure development, Museveni praised China for giving Uganda loans for projects neglected by other partners. According to Museveni, this has enabled Uganda to save its money for other things, and use the loans, which have a longer repayment period.
