Independent candidates Asiimwe Jackline Matovu and Jeremiah Kamurari Birungyi reportedly withdrew from the race yesterday (Thursday) following a meeting with the NRM vice chairperson Ali Hajji Moses Kigongo.
It all started after Electoral Commission bounced Masiko from the nomination exercise over lack of the requisite academic qualification. On Monday, Masiko showed up for nominations with a catering certificate, which was rejected by electoral commission.
As the party leadership ponders the next move ahead of today’s nominations, demonstrations have already broken out as kangwagye’s supporters protest the approval of Nathan Byanyima as the NRM Flag Bearer.
The process is however delayed in some sub counties where polling materials were not distributed on time despite a commitment by the Party’s electoral commission that materials would be at all designated polling centers by 6.00 am.
But as the election draws closer, some candidates have threatened to boycott the NRM primary polls citing intimidation and interference by Michael Toyota and Shadrack Nzire both brothers to President Yoweri Museveni. The two are allegedly campaigning for their nephew Steven Kangwagye.
