Police officers at Amuria Police Station, who preferred anonymity because they are not allowed to speak to the media said that most defilement cases are concealed by the parents as they opt for negotiations with the suspects.
The deceased identified as Teresa Akiror, a resident of Apule Village in Kapujan Sub County was killed by a stray bullet when violence ensued between the supporters of Elakas and Joseph Andrew Koluo, who were both contesting for Toroma County NRM Flag. The two contenders lost the race to Julius Ossiya.
The deceased, 75-year-old David Kizza had also been the area chairperson for more than 30 years. He collapsed and died on July 8 shortly after a long day of campaigning. The renowned member of National Resistance Movement-NRM party had contested as an independent candidate in the race which attracted five candidates.
Police is under the spotlight for mismanaging investigations into a criminal assault case filed by Uganda Radio Network Journalist Edward Bindhe against NRM party spokesperson Rogers Mulindwa. A police officer identified as Musa Bwambale, who was initially charged with investigating the matter, started tossing him alleging that the file had been misplaced and could only be found if he paid in some money. This went on until Maxwell Ogwal, the then Greater Masaka Police Commander, intervened and ordered Bwambale to produce the case file before he eventually assigned Samuel Mukesi to proceed with investigations.
Residents also accused the vendors of blocking feeder roads and contributing to the conflicts in the business community. However, the vendors rejected their pending evictions and petitioned the district security committee chaired by Resident District Commissioner Paul Lubowa implicating the officials for soliciting between 50,000 and 500,000 shillings to allow them operate in the area.
A quack doctor who was arrested less than a month ago is back in business with his clinic receiving patients in Masaka. Because he has reopened his clinic, patients are flocking in the belief he has been cleared to operate.

Parliament on Friday resolved to pay tribute to the late Butaleja woman Member of Parliament Cerinah Nebanda, who died under unclear circumstances seven days ago. The Masaka ad hoc land committee has ordered police to arrest and prosecute Rev. Fr. Joseph Kaita, the district land board chairperson for alleged corruption, a day after he failed to answer queries related to the illegal allocation of 122 plots of land in the town.
