Kalema had been accused of committing acts that were prejudicial to the proper performance of the duties of the university and hurting the university image. Together with Bennet Magara, he was suspended by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe on December 21, 2018, who accused them of promoting hooliganism.
A university probe team assigned to investigate the matter found Dr. Kanakulya in breach of the university rules, regulations and procedures. The team has recommended that Dr. Kanakulya be referred to the university Appointments Board for Disciplinary Action.
The staff were angered by the unfair ruling the University Council’s Appointments Board Committee that suspended the MUASA leader Dr Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi for six months on half pay.
