Hamza Ssempala, one of the children who was selling things on the streets, says that the project has changed his life and that of his mother tremendously. He now has access to books, coaching, and his mother is empowered financially.
Bruno Muwuluzi, a student from Uplands High School, said that some of their colleagues on streets come from poverty stricken families and distant areas where they are offered to buyers by their parents under the pretext of finding jobs for them.
The ministry closed up to 150 homes in a four-month exercise that began in September 2018. The exercise was as a result of a Cabinet decision that called for the closure of all illegal homes on grounds that some of them were used to traffic children out of the country.
