According to security, the Albertine region that is at the porous border with the DR Congo is at greater risk since the DR Congo hosts ADF militants who are a threat to Uganda yet there are always cross-border movements between residents in the Albertine and those from the DRC, a thing security operatives say might led to infiltration of wrong elements.
Jonbosco Kyaligonza, the Settlement commandant at Kyangwali refugee’s settlement area told Uganda Radio Network in an interview that the refugees including women, children and men reported to the settlement area on Thursday and Friday last week.
The roads to be constructed consist of the Kasindi section at the border to Beni (80km), the integration of the Beni-Butembo stretch (54km), and the Bunagana to Rutsuru-Goma Road (89km), altogether amounting to 223 kilometres.
Uganda and DRC entered a bilateral agreement to implement strategic infrastructure projects which includes constructing the road from Kasindi to Beni measuring about 80 kilometres, Beni to Butembo measuring 54 kilometres and the Bunagana border to Ruchuru-Goma road which measures 89 kilometres.
The drivers have been stuck for days along the Kasese-Bwera road after flood-driven debris piled at Mpondwe bridge that connects Uganda to the Democratic Republic of Congo following heavy rains on Thursday. The disaster cut off access for heavy truck drivers to the two countries, through Mpondwe.
The first case was a 26-year-old electrician from Beni, a town that has been the epicentre of the outbreak for most of its duration. On Saturday the country also registered another death of an 11- -months-old baby girl who succumbed to the disease.
So far, 215 people in DRC have tested positive to coronavirus disease since march 10, when the first case was reported. The country has also lost 20 people to the disease, according to records by the World Health Organisation-WHO.
Uncorroborated reports also indicate that some traders are escorted by police and other armed personnel to Beni in DRC. Last month, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni ordered the closure of all borders and the airports with exception of cargo trucks to contain the spread of COVID19.
