The survey done by Advocates for Public Spaces shows that garbage disposal is a problem at almost all markets, with 71 per cent of the garbage dumped in and around the market space instead of the skips provided.
Fort Portal Municipality is facing a sanitation crisis due to lack of public toilets. There is only one toilet in the municipality managed by Link Bus Company on Kahinju road. According to a World Bank Water and Sanitation Programme report, at least 3.5 million Ugandans have no latrines at all and the place of convenience is open spaces. This poor sanitation is costing the country at least 389 billion shillings annually.
The town councilâ€™s traders and dwellers say that the absence of a public toilet puts their lives at risk. They claim that the many people who throng the town to conduct business end up using open spaces, bushes and a nearby swamp because the town does not have a public toilet.
Traders at Kagunga market in Ikumba sub-county have been left without toilet facilities after they were barred from using a council toilet built on private land. The toilet had been built as an emergency measure on Valeriano Muheirweâ€™s land.
