Mary Babirye Kabanda, the Masaka District Woman MP expresses fear that the local authorities could be spending public funds on nonexistent road gangs that are meant to carry out regular road maintenance.
A Uganda National Roads Authority UNRA official and the Masaka Municipal engineer have boycotted a committee investigating alleged fraud and poor state of roads in Masaka district. On Friday Members of Parliament from Masaka district who sit on the district road Committee started investigating how monies under the Uganda Road Fund were utilised. Last financial year, Masaka district got at least 1.1 billion shillings from Uganda Road Fund of which 950 million shillings went to Masaka Municipality.
Bonny Kasujja, the DP Chairman Masaka municipality, says Maos reign is a liability to the party. According to Kasujja, Mao only concentrates on suppressing descent within the party as opposed to finding solutions to key problems.
The meeting was convened by a section of Democratic Party members led by Masaka Municipality MP Mathias Mpuuga to discuss, among others, the recent suspension of Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze from the party.
The hospital currently lacks vital drugs. Power supply is unstable. The X-ray machine remains closed as the hospital is yet to fulfil the conditions that led to its closure. In June this year, the Uganda Atomic Energy Council AEC-Uganda ordered the closure of the X-Ray and Scan machine section of the hospital saying it was below the required standards.
Although official prayers were due to start at 9am, speeches by the various leaders continued beyond 10:30am evoking protests among faithfuls who accused their leaders of disrespecting Eid prayers. Masaka Municipality MP Mathias Mpuuga was delivering a speech at the time of the unrest.
Mpuuga says winning in both Nyendo-Ssenyange and Katwe Butego and losing at only three polling station means they are destined for victory. He says they are tallying results at their parallel center set up at Tropic Inn Hotel.
Results indicate that members of the pressure group that temporarily abandoned DP in 2010 over lack of transparency secured 98% of the positions. At least 180 out of the 200 elected committee members in Katwe-Butego and Kimanya-Kyabakuza Divisions are aligned to Suubi.
The two, Masaka Recreation grounds and Nyendo-Kasana playground have been operating without functioning toilet facilities. The facilities were closed in 2012 due to the failure by custodian authorities to clear water bills. In addition to poor sanitation, the fields no longer have grass.
Mpuuga noted that it was over two months since the Speaker directed a select committee to be formed and expeditiously handle the report in order to reach a solution on the KCCA matters that are in line with the KCCA Act that was enacted by Parliament.
