The Wakiso District Natural Resources Officer, Rebecca Ssabaganzi, notes that Uganda hasnt reached the level of mining sand from Lake Victoria given the low levels of technology and availability of alternative places where sand can be collected from as the lake remains preserved.
Ambrose Lotuke, the district chairperson Kotido says charcoal burning was embraced by communities especially in new settlements as a source of livelihood. He observes that much as several people have been apprehended by police, the existing laws are weak in punishing charcoal dealers.
Kyenjojo district local government will spend 80% of its local revenue to control deforestation. Deforestation is alarmingly high in Bugaki, Matiri, Rugombe, Kihura, Nyantungo and Nyankwanzi.
