Rwomiire previously served as the third prime minister in charge of planning and investments, a position he was appointed to by Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru in September 2024.
Four days after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, one woman in Tooro shares her fond memories of the day she met the British monarch 68 years ago. Now aged 79, Mrs. Mary Tibamwenda Atwoki boasts having met Elizabeth II on two occasions in her lifetime and also dining with the Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret.
Omukama Oyo’s uncle, Prince Charles Kamurasi, the head of the Babiito Clan, or Omusuuga, says Tooro shared a special relationship with the departed British monarch from the time she visited the kingdom in 1954. Kamurasi, who was in primary three, remembers how his father, Omukama George Kamurasi Rukidi III, received Queen Elizabeth at Kikorongo just outside the national park in present-day Kasese District.
Currently, the Kingdom is in negotiations with the government for the return of the Kingdom assets that were reverted to the government after the abolition of monarchies in 1967.
The districts of Kabarole, Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa and Bunyangabu currently use the Kingdom buildings to host their Sub County and County headquarters. Some of the buildings are also being occupied by schools and health facilities. Some buildings have also been turned into military installations such as the newly created UPDF Mountain Division at Muhooti Barracks.
