The Vice Chancellor of Muni University, Associate Professor Simon Anguma, attributed the delay to both the pandemic and insufficient funding received by the university. He mentioned that during the Financial Year 2022/2023, the university received a budget that was inadequate for its development needs.

Orombi will replace Dr Erick Tiyo Sekebuga Adriko, the first titular head of the institution who served for two terms following his installation in 2016. According to the Instrument dated September 28 2022, Orombi has been given a contract for a period of four years.

Muni University Wants Funds for COVID-19 Testing Centre Ministry of Health 2 1

The World Health Organisation (WHO) in the past recommended an increase in testing capacity for Covid-19 and one of the suggested areas was to establish more testing facilities to strengthen and increase speedy confirmation of Covid-19 cases. WHO also recommends that countries should have the ability to carry out mass testing if need arises. Besides the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) that is taking lead in the Covid-19 tests, government through the Ministry of Health in May announced the accreditation of 7 more laboratories to carry out tests.

Muni University Graduation Hangs in Balance Over Finances 1 1

The budget performance trend before the committee indicates that the University non-wage budget had only increased from 3.4 billion Shillings in the financial year 2016/2017 to 4.4 billion Shillings in 2018/2019. Dr Picho Odubuker points out that even the 4.4 billion Shillings provided last financial year includes a 1.7 billion Shillings supplementary budget of which only 1 billion Shillings was provided.
