The donation which is estimated to cost one billion shillings ($265,000) was delivered at the Ministry of Health on Friday and comes at a time when the country has recorded one mpox death and an increasing number of confirmed cases of the disease that has since been declared a public health emergency of international concern.
Last year, Uganda introduced the injectable ARV Cabotegravir as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) option for HIV prevention and treatment, but its usage remains limited due to availability challenges.
A statement released by the US mission in Uganda on Thursday shows this three year project will be implemented by an NGO Strong Minds where they will focus on building the local evidence base around mental health and development in addition to increasing locally available, evidence-informed, affordable mental health services by training community members in how to effectively deliver these services.
The US has four travel advisory levels to its citizens: Exercising normal precautions, Exercising increased caution, Reconsidering travel and Complete travel ban.
“There is no guarantee that the Department of State will be able to continue to provide repatriation assistance and transportation options to the United States may be unavailable in the future. If you choose to remain overseas, you should be prepared to remain where you are for the foreseeable future”, the US government warned their citizens against any more international travel.
