The acting Kitgum District Health Officer, Dr. Henry Okello Otto told Uganda Radio Network in an interview on Tuesday that both stocks of Sinovac and AstraZeneca vaccines got used on Thursday last week. He says that the stock out follows an overwhelming demand for COVID-19 vaccination by the populace in the district.
George Ocan, the District Secretary for Health disclosed that they have proposed activation of the work of the village structures and intensify surveillance and risk communication interventions to strengthen coordination.
According to the health ministry, on average vaccines worth Ugx 6.5 billion are wasted annually during routine immunization. However, with a shortage of funds and supply of COVID-19 vaccines, health workers are being advised to open vaccine vials once a minimum of 10 people have registered for vaccination
According to a study published in the medical journal, the Lancet that took place in the UK people who got the first and second vaccine three months apart or even longer had an efficacy of 81 percent compared to 55 percent for those who got at a six or eight-week interval. However, the health ministry says it will follow WHO recommendations that say the vaccine should be administered 8-12 weeks apart
“His contacts in Gulu are still under routine follow up till 29th June with potential to convert either COVID-19 Positive or negative.” Dr. Aceng’s letter partly read. Adding that, “Therefore a decision to unlock your district will be taken after 29th June, 2020.”
