Karuma Bridge was temporarily closed in April this year after engineers found crucial components of the bridge among them the bearings, and the expansion joints had worn out and developed cracks.
According to Nampiima, the move is aimed at allowing the completion of works on the road, which is in its final stages before being handed over to the government.
Emmanuel Kakuru, a truck driver from Kanungu district, says the situation at the bridge has brought everything to a halt. He says that they were told that it will take two days for the ferry to resume operations.
A section of culverts that had been installed at a swamp in Abone village, Lira Palwo Sub county collapsed about three months ago but no major repair works have been undertaken by UNRA engineers.
The Uganda National Roads Authority, UNRA, says this is a result of both lack of knowledge on the use of high-speed roads (highways) or expressways or selfishness by motorists who disregard the rights and safety of others.
A month after President Yoweri Museveni flagged off the tarmacking of Masindi-Pader to Acholibur Highway; residents say the road, which is under UNRA has been impassable after several sections of the road including a section of Abuli in Apac Sub County, Ibuje, and Aduku Town Council were cut off by floods respectively.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony held at Anai Primary School, Lira City East Division, president, Yoweri Museveni noted that the road project will increase connectivity in the region, facilitate trade and help exploit the agricultural opportunities in the area.
