Ritah Nalweyiso the District Councillor for Butuntumula sub-county says that although they had mobilized many women to give birth in government health centers, the deaths may force them to resort back to Traditional Birth Attendants.
Opendi raised concern about the alarming rate at which mothers are dying for causes that can be easily detected and treated. "We have seen a lot of funds that have been put aside to fight death caused by COVID-19, in a similar way we want to request the government to put money in ending these maternal deaths,” said Opendi.
Figures from the Annual Health Sector Performance review show that a total of 496 mothers died during childbirth in 2019/2020 compared to 424 the previous year, recording a 7% increase in the recorded deaths.
