The installation of Otaya, 66, comes after several futile attempts since 2021. Otaya, an educationist now sets autonomy of the Kumam community from the Iteso Cultural Union- ICU under Emorimor as paramount chief.
His coronation on Wednesday attracted thousands of people from within and outside the Teso sub-region including delegations from Buganda Kingdom and Won Nyachi of Lango.
Egunyu served as Soroti district LC V Chairperson for two terms before crossing to contest as City Mayor in 2021 where he lost to the FDC’s Joshua Edogu. Before becoming the district chairperson, Egunyu was the mayor of the then Soroti Municipality, a position he held for 10 years.
Dr. Charles Otim, the Chairperson of the ICU Electoral Commission, says that the election of the new Emorimor is expected on July 30 during the clan delegates conference.
According to Charles Ebayu Ocen, the chairperson of Kumam Cultural Heritage, the Kumam elders started seeking recognition in 1989 under the leadership of Mzee Joseph Ekemu, the former Kaberamaido County Member of Parliament who also served as Attorney General between 1997/1998 before his arrest over the allegations of corruption.
