Ssebugenyi stated that the company overseeing the registration has so far recorded information from at least 170,000 individuals, mainly coffee farmers spread across various regions. However, this number represents only a small portion of the estimated 1.6 million households engaged in coffee farming nationwide.
The passage of the Bill, which reshapes the country’s coffee regulatory framework, took place during a plenary sitting on Wednesday 6th November 2024 amid heightened tensions and an opposition walkout led by Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, who exited in protest following earlier disruptions.
