The Uganda government has given petroleum companies a go-ahead to drill oil from the Murchison Falls–Albert Delta, an internationally recognized wetland protected site. The delta is also listed as a Ramsar site under the Ramsar Treaty and provides vital habitat for different bird species and other threatened plants and animals.

NEMA Claims Oil Waste Not Harmful To Environment tullow 3

NEMA Executive Director Tom Okurut said that tests have finally been carried out on the wastes and that the results indicated it has no harm. He explained that the samples the wastes tested were found to contain substances capable of polluting the environment, mainly traces of heavy metals in addition to residual hydrocarbons but in less concentration.
