The Uganda Police Force has said it will intensify its operation against drunk-driving as a measure to curb crime during the new years celebration. At least 10 people died and many sustained injuries in road accidents between 26th to 29th December, according to police spokesperson Emilian Kayima.
The guidelines by the new management of the park are meant to reduce on accidents, but also improve on the working conditions for those who work in and use the park.
Dr. Kasiima announced the operation while meeting drivers and passenger’s leaders in Mayors Gardens in Masaka on Thursday. Kasiima says in this operation, carrying sacks of grasshoppers in taxis, loading excess passengers, over speeding will all be punished. Cars and taxis in dangerous mechanical conditions have been banned.
The Jinja District Police Commander Apollo Kateeba is set to appear before the Police Standards Unit (PSU) after one of his officers drove a Police vehicle under the influence of alcohol. The officer David Kasirye caused multiple accidents during his drunk-driving run on Sunday morning.
The Member of Parliament for Pian County in Nakapiripirit district, Remegio Achia, has spent his entire day locked up at Jinja road police station for drink driving. Achia was booked into the police cells on Monday shortly after the car he was driving was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle at Banda, a Kampala suburb.
Survivors of Lwengo bus accident that occurred on Tuesday morning are being forced to share beds at Lyantonde hospital. The total number of accident survivors admitted to the hospital is 12.
