Moses Kipsiro wins gold in the 10, 000 metres at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Kipsiro stunned fellow runners by coming back from 7th position with only 300 metres to go to take the first position and defend his 10, 000 metres Commonwealth crown.
The player said he is devastated by the fact that the government has decided that all allowances offered by President Yoweri Museveni for the commonwealth games will be signed for when the athletes return home. Unlike Uganda, Kenyan athletes were given up to US$6,600 in allowances, Ekiring Explains.
Last Saturday while flagging off the team to the Games, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni promised to clear the deficit of about Ugx 350 million for Team Uganda to be able to receive all the expected allowances. Initially the government had only released Ugx 254 million which was not enough to cater for the Ugandan team.
Apollo Makubuya, the Buganda Minister in-charge of Constitutional Affairs said the kabaka, an ardent fan and squash player opted to support the team following reports that the team has not been well facilitated.
However, while speaking to URN later, UOC President William Blick said they are yet to receive even half of the money that was earlier released by the government and the deficit of Ugx 347million for clearing the allowances and balance on air tickets.
Several sports Federations and Associations have complained to government over the delayed disbursement of funds for their athletes who are busy training for the 2014 Commonwealth games slated for July 23 to August 3 in Scotland.
Vice President Edward Ssekandi will accompany the team for the 2014 Commonwealth Games to take place in Glasgow, Scotland. Ambrose Tashobya, an executive member of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) who will be the Chief-de- Mission, disclosed to URN on Thursday morning that Ssekandi will represent President Yoweri Museveni at the Games.
