The bridge, the longest across a river in East Africa, at 8 metres high and 525 metres long, was funded through a loan from Japanese International Cooperation Agency JICA and constructed by Zenitaka Corporation Company. It becomes the second gateway to the Eastern part of Uganda after the Owen Falls Bridge which has exceeded its lifespan.
Authorities in Mbarara Municipality have moved in to reduce the number of cyclists operating stages in the towns central Business district. The move is according to the authorities aimed at checking congestion and restore order along the main street,Bananuka drive,Markhan Singh street and Buremba.

Mbarara Municipal leaders have passed a resolution that will see them work boda boda cyclists and other volunteers to report people involved in littering the town.
